Dunlop’s Darryl Anders filed this report from the front lines of Bass Player LIVE! Saturday & Sunday October 22 & 23, 2011 in Los Angeles, CA…

I spent two days at SIR Studios in Hollywood, California surrounded by the thunderous sounds of bass to the Nth power. The Dunlop booth was full of excitement over the new MXR Bass Innovations Bass Fuzz Deluxe. There was a stellar list of players and endorsers dropping by—Tim Lefebvre (top NYC session bassist recently relocated to LA ), Darryl Jones (bassist for the Rolling Stones), Bryan Beller (Metalocalypse, The Aristocrats), and Oskar Cartaya to name a few. There were live performances by Ethan Farmer (Christina Aguilera) on lead bass backed by his cousin Daamo Farmer and Lil Ron on drums. Ethan and co. treated the crowd to some of the funkiest MXR Bass Octave and MXR Envelope Filter drenched funk the world has ever known.
Upright bass master Miles Mosley opened up a whole new world of possibilities with his uber-creative use of MXR pedals. A truly gifted player, Miles created a colorful tapestry of sonic textures, hip-hop grooves, swingin’ straight-ahead jazz, and a solo “Flight of the Bumble Bee” that left every jaw dropped.
Saturday evening Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Jack Cassady, James Jamerson, and the God Father of Funk Bass Larry Graham. James Jamerson Jr. was joined onstage by Phil Chen, as well as Alan Slutsky on guitar, James Gadson on drums and special guest appearance by Pino Palladino—talk about P-Bass heaven! Graham’s band Graham Central Station was joined on stage by bass superman Marcus Miller and Verdine White of Earth Wind and Fire for an all star jam!
All in all, another stellar show from the good folks over at Bass Player magazine! Here are the first of our photos and a couple of videos from Bass Player LIVE! 2011, check back soon for more pictures and video…
