Jazz iii Max grip, the point of the pic and with the max grip it makes playing much easier

  • Zach

I’ve honestly used jazz 3′s sense I started playing. It’s hard to move to anything else when you grew up on something. Plus, the speed of them is incredible, I can do any sweeps from my 1st to my 24th with this pick. Only, with this pick. They’re my little red pick in my pick box. They’re the only picks in my pick box.

  • Ethan Goss

These jazz III Picks are so great, good for rhythm, and speedy solos if
needed. Also like the ability to do pinch harmonics a lot easier, and I
know Ill never use a different pick. Also every guitarist that I’ve met
and let use one of these picks usually never use anything else but that.

  • Russ

All I can say is I’ve never had one long enough to get attached to ‘em.  Other players keep stealing them from me.  :)

  • Catmac710

makes for easier playing. they rock!

  • VerrucktsAl

i don’t use one, give me some to try them out.

  • Jcmfer

I play nothing but Jazz III and the E.J. customs…there super fast and smooth and have grate rebound off the strings.I started playing them about 4 years ago and my playing took off. I use them for Bass and Guitar and for all styles, Jazz , Blues ,Rock and Metal. there is nothing I’d rather use.

  • Lee

I found out about the cult of Jazz III picks through guitar one magazine. After trying the regular Jazz III’s & Eric Johnson editions I found the XL Jazz III’s  which I wish came in a max grip version like the smaller ones.. Though I still use the XL’s most of the time. I love these picks because once I discovered them my picking became extremely efficient and the picks almost naturally position perfectly in my fingers. They also opened my ears to the different tones achieved through the material the pick is made of and that is why I love Dunlop picks especially Jazz III’s . – Lee Jackson

I honestly have never used a jazz3 Dx i want to try them so bad though i hear great things about them, do i get those free picks mentioned above for at least telling the truth and saying i dont have a jazz3 story? i would really like to make get a jazz3 story to write about and find a pick i can actually stick with instead of switching around all the time.

  • Zendavis

    i need i need i want i want

Well I started to play guitar a year ago mybe earlier, I like to collect picks too, when I heard that everybody talking about the Jazz III pick I decided I have to try it,so I go to the shop boght 2 red picks (the Seller want to give me one black and one red but I wanted 2 red picks).I went back home and start to play on my guitar,my first time when I use it that he is smaller then the picks I used to play with them (dunlop nylon and plastic picks) , but he had a very strong plastic and he Sliding on the strings really well.
So Yeah I love My Jazz III pick :D

For me what makes the Jazz III my pick of choice is the combinaton of the small  size, the pointed tip, and the edge bevel. That shape is perfect for economy of motion and the tip goes exactly where  you want it to.  Whoever designed these is someone I’d like to thank and shake their hand for a job well done.

I just recently started using Ultex Jazz 3′s after using 1.5mm 500′s forever. I do alot of alternate picking and this pick with the sharp point just seems to lend itself well to that style and pinch harmonics just seem to fly out of the guitar with these picks. I bought 5 packs about 6 months ago and the durablilty of the ultex material is so good i’m only into the second pack and some of those i lost or somebody stole. I can honestly see these picks staying with me for the long haul.

  • Ipozestu

Jazz III for Free is much cheaper than a Jazz III for three. Pick away broham….

  • Julien

I’ve always been searching for the perfect pick. One which feels as natural as my fingers, and one day, I found this. It was nothing more than a random choice, because there were not my usual picks. I found his little shape interesting so i wanted to try it.No i have always got one with me, in my pockets, in my gigbag, around my neck. It has become a part of me. In a way, it is the 6th finger of my right hand !

when I 1st started playing 16 years ago, my kid sister gave me a tin of 50 picks for Christmas. Various shapes and sizes. I was a guitar addict from day 1 so I spent my entire Christmas break from school sampling all the different picks she’d got me. In the collection were a few Jazz III’s and to be 100% honest i couldn’t grip them. I’d drop the pick within 30 seconds of playing so I  didn’t really give them another look in. I went with standard Tortex picks. Fast forward about 5 years when I began getting a little more proficient with the instrument and discovered (you may of heard of him) John Petrucci. I wanted to mimic everything JP was doing so i checked out what type of pick he used. My initial reaction was “I can’t use those Jazz III picks, how the hell does he do it?”, alas, I gave it another crack and have never ever strayed. I’ll be playing with Jazz III’s on my death bed, guaranteed! The shape, the texture, that percussive snap i get…nothing else comes close!

Ok so I started to play guitar in let me see…2008. It was all new, didnt know what to do where to go still I had a friend that gave me an acoustic and told me its yours, now you will need this above all, this will be the tool that will make you play good, and he gave me a Jim Dunlop Stubby, I liked the thing that it was perfect fit fot my fingers and it had the sharp tip. I used but got aware that the tip would get round really fast because of the use and it would make it hard to play. So then, I started to look for a lasting pick and went from tortex to fender picks to generic ones, neither had what I looked for, until one day. I entered to a small shop where they would sell only a few guitars and accesories and they had a big dunlop supply, so I started to look for a thing like a stubby buy not so fragile, and the lady told me:

-Hey why don´t you try these ones? they are really durable and comfortable, they are for shredders also.

So I went home with a bunch of Jazz III´s and it was from there that I havent changed to any other pick. I like the Max Grip because it feels really stubby and doesnt slip at all, in normal jazz IIIs I like the black ones but still I preffer red ones because of the feel they have, they are the most awesome thing ever and I wouldnt choose anything else to play. They have improved my technique, my phrasing, my speed, that is because they are small and you can feel the string with the fingers and only use the very tip. That is as much prescise as you can ever go with a pick.

  • Jayiron

when i first tried them i was like “these things are tiny, what are they gonna do for me?!” but its the size that matters for
me! i have better articulation with them, chords sound fuller, and i
can get the harmonics that i want with no more than a joint movement
v.s. a pick movement with the others! absolutely love them!! now they have become my secret weapon for near 17 years!! thanks dunlop!

I just use Jazz III’s, no clue what gauge, it’s an amazing pick. My friend Blaine used these black ice picks and I had bought them for awhile but it just wasn’t cutting it, the shape was nice but the tone and comfort wasn’t there and I found a red jazz III laying on the ground at a mom and pop music shop and I picked it up and demoed some guitars and was blown away at the pure comfort of this pick. Been using them ever since. I joke and say god sent it down to me. But in all due respect it is an amazing product and I will continue to use them as long as you guys keep making them.

Hello everyone! It is a late hour here in Latvia where I have come across the news about the Jazz-III competition. In this late hour, I think about my lost love. He loves Jazz-III and I used to buy them for him so that he always has them, whenever he wants to play. He loved them. He said that he loved me. There was passion in these little red picks, from them our love grew – I first asked him what picks he uses in the middle of the night via sms, and he answered immediately. It somehow touched his heart that I was interested in his picks in the middle of the night. This was a beautiful love story, the most beautiful I have ever had. Honestly. Then, after a year, things changed and he left me. I do not know what exactly I have done wrong. Things happen. Only one thing I know. I cry at night and I keep on remembering the little red picks. The delicate but passionate symbol of the love I have lost, the love I hope to return. I wish they could turn back the time and bring the passion back to life.

  • Joeobrown

I first used one when I was trying out guitars in my local music shop, and I didn’t have a pick with me, so I used one the salesperson had. I walked out without a guitar, but I did nick the pick :D

  • Grind40

    JazIII best pic ever!!!!!!

  • Sonicx2218

I’ve been using jazz 3s for a long time; The standard red jazz 3s. Don’t use anything else. The perfect guage, perfect shape; it cuts across the strings perfectly.

  • Cameron

Well… I actually came on here to say that I saw Joe Bonamassa playing one of these picks and had to get me one!!! Lo and Behold I click on the link and there is old Smokin Joe talking about the pick!!  Look… to say that these are great picks would be an understatement.  These undeniably have shaped my tone into the monster that I have always wanted.  If I loose or win this giveaway I still win!!! Thanks Dunlop!!!

  • Kyle

I usually alternate between blue tortexs and black jazz 3s, but especially on faster parts, you just can’t beat the jazz 3

  • Oldcomputech

I honestly haven’t gotten a chance to try these. But if Joe likes ‘em I try some next time I end up in GC! I love my Tortex and my clear green M-L Dunlop picks so that is my story and I’m stickin’ to it

  • http://www.ErikZmusic.com Erik Z

I was a purple Tortex 1.14mm guy until 1997.  My guitar teacher at Berklee at the time, Norm Zocher, was trying out the Jazz III during one of our lessons and we were talking about how fine and exact it was while playing.  Almost like a scalpel or sharpened pencil.  Anyway, he let me take one of his his (a red one).   That was it, I started using it and bought a whole bunch from Jack’s drum shop (around the corner from Berklee, but they sold them for 25 cents each vs Daddy’s at 50 cents) and from that day forward I have never used another pick.   Every other pick feels like a roofing shingle or something.   You never get that “Pick” sound, it works as an extension of your body rather than a “plecktum”.  I’ve bought all the different ones too; black, grip, ultex, but still keeping coming back to the reds.  I actually have one sitting right next to me right now, and I’m  not even playing guitar. :-)

  • Leland Osborne

It was around the year 2001 and I was about 14 years old. My cousin T.J. was up to visit us, and apparently they had stopped at a Taco Bell along the way and T.J. found a pick on the ground. The pick he found happened to be a red Jazz III. I’d never seen a pick like it before, and since then I’ve been hooked. I now at 24 I almost exclusively use jazz picks.

  • Oli

My pick tin is Jazz III’s and Jazz III’s only. Bonamassa said it right, after playing it, you can no longer play regular sized, it was after I discovered every AMAZING guitarist out there has the red triangle as their pick of choice. The Jazz III has immensely improved my playing, I own around 200 of them, and all the money I saved and spent on them, I havent regretted one penny.

  • Jbustin49

When I had first started playing guitar I was walking around school and saw a little red pick on the ground with jazz III written on it I picked it up and never put it down, I’ve used that same pick for 5 years

  • Guitarplayntaylor

I use the Eric Johnson jazz 3s cause they seem to be slightly larger and easier to hold onto due to the matte finish!

  • Lefty

My guitar teach had given me one and said, “This is the pick you want to use” I used that same little red pick for three years before I lost it and had to buy my own. Now I can’t keep them a month

  • Ryley_97

    Where do i start…
Dunlop Jazz lll are unique there are no other picks like it and nothing compares they are simply AMAZING!!
All my time i have been using Jim dunlop nylop ,, but then i discovered the Jazz lll, like a shining holy grale of Guitar picks.. Simply Nothing else compares..
    Please pick me Dunlop

  • Sean Asher

I started playing guitar 5 years ago. My mom got me a cheap Strat copy from conns. At first I didn’t real touch it at all. But I picked up again right before I turned 13, so I’ve been working hard on my chops since 2009. I will admit, I sucked, everybody does. But I was determined to get good, so my metal influences really helped my drive stay strong. Before I started using Jazz 3′s (I started using them in August 2010) I used Jim Dunlop Gator Grips 2.0 gauge. They were great, the material never wore down, the pick absorbed my sweat and always felt dry. And the grip..oh god it was amazing. But it just wasn’t working cause at that point my biggest influence was Slipknot’s Mick Thomson. I wanted to learn alot of the techniques he used. But the Gator Grip’s made pinch harmonics and fast alternate picking…a pain in the ass. So I looked at what he played and he said he used Jazz 3′s exclusively….to be more specific he uses the jazz 3 nylon grips that dunlop made just for him. So I was like “That’s what I need..not these gator grips”. So I lived in Texas at the time and I lived 10 miles from the Beaumont Guitar Center. After weeks of pestering my Uncle, he drove me down. Initially, I wanted the ones with the grip molds like Micks. But, unfortunatly, they only had the regular red and black ones. So I took home a pack of 6 reds, sat down with my SG and tested them. It took me all but ten minutes to get used to the size. After that, I was blown away. I can’t say enough good things about these picks, they gave great tone, long life (I’ve NEVER had to throw one away, these things last forever!!!) and they made me a far better played. Honestly, because of this pick, my playing has progressively improved more than the year and half I played gator grips. When I got shops and people hear me play, they look at me and ask me to teach them how I got as good as I am. All I do is hold up my Jazz 3 and tell them buy a pack. One thing I’d like to mention is that I cut grip into mine, that way they don’t slip, which makes them even more fun to play. So thank you Dunlop, you’ve made a product that will love till I die, and I will always tell people about this pick.
    Thank you for reading,
    Sean Asher, 15, Prescott, Arizona

After accidentally swallowing a Jazz III at a show, on stage….. I have developed an addiction to them. I eat them like chips out of a packet these days. A Jazz III combo pack would be perfect to satisfy my insatiable hunger for them. For just a while.

  • Haydeo Smith

A tiger flew out of the sky in his BMW, made out of nothing but Ultex. He crashed before me and crawled out of the wreckage saying “The ring has chosen you dip-sh&#”. I said “Forget that! I’ll take those picks over there in your cup-holder.” The picks said Jazz III, and I knew I was destined to use them. I traveled the world in search of a new guitar because mine caught fire in a terrible BMW accident. I ended up finding one at some gold-plated pawn shop in Arizona. I then climbed the tallest mountain I could find, with my guitar in hand. Legends told of a legendary amplifier that was over the hills and far away. When I finally found it, I realized I didn’t bring any cables. After several months, I motivated myself to climb up the mountain again with the cables. I plugged in, closed my eyes, and played the first thing that came to my mind. AND THAT’S WHEN I REALIZED, I needed a lot of practice. BUT ALSO, I knew that these picks would become part of who I was and what I would play for the world one day. And that is my Jazz III story.

  • T. Aleks C.

I’m a bass player, I have primarily played with my fingers since I started playing when I was 10 years old, I am 21 now as I’m typing this. I started playing with a band and there were some tones that they were looking for that I couldn’t quite pop out with my fingers so I asked for a pick, I said “preferably something thick so I don’t accidentally break or ruin it”, one of the guitarist handed me this tiny little red triangle that fit perfectly in my fingers, I started playing with it and the tones that it helped me produce were still warm, but with a nice little high end pop, I loved it, and still do. I’m known in my local music shop as that bassist who buys the Jazz III’s (apparently there aren’t many of us).

I play everything from Metal to Jazz and everything in between, and I use Jazz III’s for all of it, If my fingers aren’t on the strings, I can guarantee that there’s a Jazz III between them helping creating what I consider a perfect bass tone. I may not be with the group that got me started with the Jazz III’s anymore, but I owe them a for helping me build my tones and playing style to what they are by introducing me to those sweet little picks.

  • Zaiusbot

After searching the globe chasing sonic bliss always off in the distance I found a jazz III hidden in a dragons cave. The minute I touched it my guitar lit up like a Phoenix rising and I was born! No really after years of using a normal pick I just needed more stiffness but isn’t need the pick to get bigger as a whole. I found the jazz III and was in love with it. I was into shred at the time and could fire out scales with rapid fire precision. I have quite a collection of these that I have collected over the years. After some time I tried the jazz III XL and still use them to this day although I need to win this contest and get some free ones cause I can’t find them in stores. I will say that I do use a high grit sandpaper and take some o the roughness out sometimes but as a whole I don’t ever search for new picks. They are all I will ever use. Thanks!

  • Petruccirocks02

I use all different types of Jazz III’s (Ultex, Ultex 2.0, Black, Red, EJ, etc.). The coolest story that I have about a Jazz III is when I went to a bar on Long Island NY to see John Petrucci’s wife’s band play a show. I got to hang out with JP and have a few beers with him and get some stuff signed. As we were leaving the gig, Rena (JP’s wife) ran over to us and gave us all a hug and gave me one of JP’s personal Jazz III’s with the shield logo on it. I was floored at JP and Rena’s hospitality. Thanks JP and Rena!

  • http://twitter.com/dainiskaulenas Dainis

Initially I switched to Jazz IIIs to clean up my picking technique (which worked like a charm, BTW). But then, every other pick felt like a frisbee. The red ones are the best, mainly because if you drop them, you can find them even on the darkest stage.
    Rock on, JD!

  • Joe M.

Ever since I found one in a grocery store parking lot, it’s been my go-to pick. Been using it, exclusively, for 7 years now. Thanks Dunlop and whoever dropped their pick!

  • Sagal

Ive tried tons of picks since I started playing and the Black Tortex Jazz III are like on a whole different level than other picks solely on feel alone but, are also conviently already sharp to a point right out the package. I use to spend so long sharpening my picks. Going from my lame fender Heavey picks to The Jazz’s was a like taking a cold showers for your entire life then learning with the turn of a knob you had a hot shower. There truly is no pick better than Dunlop Tortex Jazz III.

There is nothing like a Dunlop pick!!!!  Jazz lll picks give you the attack that you need to summon the thunder and shush down the rain!!!!  I am tellin’ you!  My last gig was my best ever, and my swords to slay the dragons, were Jazz lll’s….

  • E_wolfman

When I first started playing guitar 2 years ago, I started with cheap celluloid guitar picks.  They kept slipping out of my hands.  A friend of mine handed me a black nylon jazz III and told me to try it.  My pentatonic practice got better and better.  I love these insane picks.  Now I use the little red pick, and love it.  Great for everything!  Love those Jazz III picks.

    Eric in Denver

  • Feedback

i’ve used a lot lot for various picks. then i tried jazz III because john petrucci’ve been using it. it becomes my fav pick. especially ultex jazz III 2.0. But i really really wish dunlop can make ultex jazz III with 2.5mm or thicker! That would be the perfect pick.

  • Bubbadodawinafred

I love these picks so much I use them on both my electric and acoustic guitars. My 4 year old daughter even uses them. My favorite story is when she dropped one in my acoustic on accident and went to go after it and snapped 2 of my strings on accident. She was upset ajd I.felt bad for her but I was a good feeling she cared so much.

  • Mauselysium

All of the picks I’ve used for my 16 years of ax-slinging have been Dunlop.  But, I never found the perfect symmetry until I fell upon the glourious Ultex Jazz III.  Not only does it hold up to the angle I hold my pick (without warping), but it’s size is a blessing when it comes to a HxSxH configuration without smacking the middle pickup.  Let’s not forget how freakishly easy it is to hit those artificial harmonics…  Everything about this pick is a winner: the size, the shape, the (indestructible) material, the tone.  I don’t even think about using anything else anymore.

  • Zal

My guitar teacher accidentally left one of these at my house. I picked up the little red monster and my playing immediately improved, from playing fast technical solos to punchy bass lines. This pick is practically made of steel. I’ve been shredding on my robert Trujillo strings for ever and it still retains it’s perfect shape .  I love these picks and have used them for the past 5 years

  • Rob Barker

I’d always heard a lot about the Jazz III, but for some reason I never picked one up. I used whisper-thin picks, insanely heavy picks, plastic, wood, metal, and nothing felt right. 10 months ago I bought my first pack of Jazz IIIs and I’ll never look back. More precise for picking, pinched harmonics that leap out at the drop of a hat and almost impossible to damage or drop (in the case of my Max Grip carbon picks anyway). For me, using the Jazz III was a massive step forward, and it’s still helping me get the sounds in my head to come across on the guitar.

  • rowdy

i saw a video with eric johnson playing one. i said to myself:’i gotta try these picks’ now i use them and i dont want anything else. their tone and playabillity are just perfect.i use both colours. i like the Black stiffo ones better for grip, but i think the tone of the red ones are better.

  • Freedom

First time I met a Jazz III was on the street. I found it laying on the ground waiting for me to “pick” it. Then I went home to try this tiny red thing. It go me out of myself! Normaly, I’ve use Tortex, but now I hate those! Haha. A Jazz III is the only pick that our band uses. A JAZZ III package would be the best thing to win. To this, add that it has utilities! Thanks to read my story.

  • Rkeller3323

I switched to Jazz III when I realized I kept breaking regular Tortex picks when soloing on stage. They also seemed so big almost like it was a waste of material you had to hold. Then I saw the little bag of red gems and gave it a whirl. I haven’t played with anything other than a Jazz III in almost 2 years. I keep boxes full of them and they are by far the best pick known to man!!

  • Michifischermail

I think this would be great in TENACIOUS D – kinda weird stuff.
i like these picks although i dont even play jazz that much…

well, we used to rehearse in some very old … hmm… sort of room ??
another (jazz) band was rehearsing there too and we shared the rent. one day i found that JAZZ III on the floor and asked their guitarist if he would mind lending it to me. he didnt.

he never got it back :)

i love these JAZZ III things ! i used tortex before, but now im addicted to jazz3. i like both colors, but in my opinion, the red ones give a more confident attack to the string.

thats for reading all that weird stuff :D

My father played in an Armenian fusion jazz band back when we were living in Kuwait. When we came to America, I was just a child a bit shy of five years old. My dad didn’t know where to get guitar picks in Kuwait. He just improvised and used all sorts of different things such as expired cards or those very long and tedious oud picks. When he came to America, he had to get a real job to provide for us, but music was still a part of him. He brought an acoustic guitar with him and when he left for work, I would mess around with the tuning pegs on his guitar, get his pick and scratch all of the strings. I remember when I held his pick, I would just be hypnotized by the color of it. It spoke to me. When he noticed that I had an interest in the instrument, he let me take guitar lessons. He told me that the pick he used was the greatest pick he’d ever laid his eyes on and he passed it down to me. I would take his old acoustic at age 7 to guitar lessons and used that pick. I was a fast learner. It ran in my blood. My father bought me an Ibanez IC400 Iceman and it was my very first guitar when I was ten. I used that guitar for years along with that pick he gave me. He bought me that guitar because the Daron Malakian of my favorite band, System of a Down, played it. I developed my skills as a heavier player. My dad went on to tell me about the pick that he wanted me to have years back. He said it was called the Jazz lll. I was not very much into Jazz music but I still loved that pick. When I turned 14 a year ago, I started playing for a metalcore band that my friends and I called destroying the daylight. It started off for fun but now it’s a more serious thing. I found out that i sweat a lot when I play like my dad, but he’d never tried a jazz 3 max grip. I use it now because the pick never falls out of my hand and it’s just a gift from the heavens. I, like my guitar hero John Petrucci, want to go to Berklee, the college of music and unlock my full potential as a player with the pick of my choice and the choice of John Petrucci. Also today, I found out Mick Thomson uses the Dunlop Max Grip Jazz 3′s which made me super hyped. It would be a dream come true for me and my father to win such an excellent prize. That is how I met the pick of my dreams <3

  • Andrea Sacerdoti

I started using Dunlop Jazz III a couple of years ago, after another couple of years of Dunlop Tortex (the purple ones). I tried my first Jazz III because I discovered John Petrucci (my favourite guitar player, of course) played them. It was love at the first sight, everything I played suddenly came out, it just felt so RIGHT! So perfect for my fingers, so accurate on the srings… Now I can’t leave without two or three Jazz picks in my pocket!

  • http://twitter.com/AgeTyree A.J. Tyree

I first heard of “Jazz III” Picks when I found them in my brothers Pick Tin. My brother plays guitar, and he has several different picks. I play bass guitar, and I like playing with my fingers, but I also try to practice both with a Pick and my fingers. I’ve tried playing with regular picks before and had fun with it, but just for fun, I wanted to try a Jazz III Pick. I took a few from my brother, and tried them, and since then they were the pick of choice for me. For Bass, playing with a pick, you’d need more grip with a pick, so I tried the Jazz III XL Picks and been using those for a while, then I tried the Tortex Jazz III Pick, and really enjoyed the feel of the pick, but didn’t get as much grip. When I heard of the TIII Picks, I knew I had to get them, so I went to the local guitar store and they special ordered some for me. I gave some to my brother and he likes them, and (When I’m playing with a pick) I use a TIII or a Jazz III Pick.

  • Anonymous

I used them for years, because I was a mindless fanboy and Alexi Laiho used them. Then I found the Dunlop Ultex Sharps, and my mind was blown.
    Never went back.

I was looking for a pick for 3 years I couldn’t find one that wasn’t so thick or thin. My current teacher once gave me as a present three picks. One of these was the Jazz III. Although I play jazz this picks had never caught my atention and they were hard to find. Plucking my strings with this pick made my ears fulfill with joy and my fingers feel alright. I love them. I found only one shop in my town that sells Dunlops, It’s become my favorite shop! Go Dunlop!!

Once upon a time, I sucked at guitar. I could never hit the strings as precisely as I wanted to. I couldn’t pick quickly and evenly like the greats. I never imagined that a certain pick could increase your playing skill so much, but its true. These picks literally make you a better guitarist. I won’t even play my guitar now if I don’t have one of these on hand, I never feel like I’m playing at my full potential without them. I have 2 of them left and I’ve had them for at least a year now. Never can make the drive the nearest guitar center, so I am EXTREMELY careful about what I do with these. Don’t believe me? Go try one!

Since I started playing guitar I’ve allways been searching for ways to ultimate ant beyond, I guess that’s just a person I am, when I started learning about guitar plectrums I heard about this legendary Jazz III I’ve never seen one before, never touched one and then… I started looking for IT… There were no place where I live to purchase these… There’s still none, but once I walked in my local music store and asked about it, once again… Then one of workers told me he uses these and has one in his pocket, I asked if I could check it out and to my luck the guy agreed, I took it and it felt really weird… but then again after an hour of noodling i took regular size plectrum and… It just didn’t feel right anymore… And that was it, I was hooked, but I still couldn’t buy one so I did what I had to… I left the owner of this pick 10 litas (about 5 bucks in US currency) and left with that pick… I know I kinda stole it but if I would have to I’d do that again… and again and again. Jazz III became a great part of my playing, it is one thing thats makes playing a guitar even more enjoyable. Everything about it is perfect and there’s no wonder why so many guitarists use it… I don’t like Jazz III I just love it. And it doesn’t matter if I’ll get this prize or not I’ll still be using it, and it doesn’t matter that it is difficult to get those where I live. Without Jazz III my playing isn’t the same anymore, way to go Dunlop thanks for inpiring us to create things never created before and thank You for this small yet very powerful wonder :) Si

I only started playing just over a year ago and got a handful of assorted junk picks cuz i didnt know what would be good. I quickly found almost all were sooo slippery to hang onto. The best one of the bunch was some old yellow thing with a faded turtle on it. I looked online and found this site. I went down to the guitar shop in town to get some tortex picks, and they were so nice and grippy i got several different ones because still didnt know what would be best, and ended up loving the little tortex jazz 0.50. I quickly wore it out with my acoustic, so I went back and got my new favorite pick now….. tortex pitch black jazz III .88mm, Ive tried ultex sharps since but ended up giving to my kids for their little half size guitars, the little pitch blacks just feel too much like home to use anything else!!

  • guess who

when i was learning i always used a tortex and had a problem with alternate picking, now that’s changed thanks to the best pick ever.
my first time using it was when i was given one by a friend.

    they are addictive.

I’ve been warming up to making the switch to JAZZ III 1 mm for like ten years now. I’ve always played the Dunlop Standard 1 mm. But since I made the switch to the Jazz III, some how my playing just lifted. My metal chuncks, triplets and what not got tighter and sharper. My soloing become more free flowing, and my picking speed got a alot faster and precise.

I just love theese little black gems. I love the feel of them in my pocket, and I love the freedom and playability and sound the give my when I abuse my Les Paul and soundwaves.
Thank you Dunlop, thank you fot the JAZZ III

I’ve been playing for about a year and I had absolutely never been comfortable with my picking until I found about the Jazz III.
I remember thinking “but why does everyone spend on things like this? If what you want is a smaller pick then grab yours closer to the tip!” and that’s what I did. My picking did improve, a lot, and I was really happy! But there was still something missing…

I decided I’d finally give it a try, and bought a pair of them. One red and one black. As soon as I came back home and tried them out I pretty much knew I had found the pick I was looking for… The hard part was actually deciding between both colors! After a rather long while I settled for the black ones, but I still grab the red one from time to time. Which means I’ll have to experiment with amps after I buy my second guitar ;)

PD.: I still feel as if something is missing in my picking, but right now that’s probably just my own technique.

It’s a funny story about the time I started becoming really interested in Jazz and Progressive rock I found one of these in the corner of my school gymnasium during a lesson. I put it in my pocket and as soon as the bell rang I went to the music department to try it out. It was a bit beat up and one of my mates who was a teacher there showed me that he used to sharpen his picks up and clean the edges by rubbing them on the carpet. After that I noticed what many others have noticed, to me this pick just felt right , like it knew where I wanted to go and it wasn’t a struggle. That pick stayed with me for a couple of months and then one day it just disappeared I was Gutted but I moved on. I went to Gator grip 2.0mm which I enjoyed for a period of time.Long story short after a mate brought me home a union jack pick from england my mum suggested I start collecting them from people who went on holiday. About a year later my grandma was heading to Australia For a holiday and asked what she could bring me back, naturally I asked for an Austrailian guitar pick, When she returned she said she couldn’t find one but she had gotten me a selection from a music shop in an alley way they found just before leaving. In astonishment i went through the small bag and found at the bottom a familiar little red pick Reading ‘JAZZ III XL SERIES’.It’s been with me ever since . The tone is back. But only recently have I started to realise how popular these are.I’ve spent a large amount of money over the past coupe of years ensuring I have plenty to tide me over if I ever was to loose one.
These things are great :) I guess it was meant to be.

I started playing guitar five years ago and bought a bunch of picks to try out. As soon as I started to play with the Jazz iii, I was floored. Nothing feels better. I can’t physically play anywhere NEAR my best if I’m NOT using a jazz iii. I won’t touch anything else now. I love the accuracy and speed I can get with them. You HAVE to be accurate with your playing because of how tiny they are and I don’t think I will ever look back.

When I began to play, I played with any pick, I didnt know anything about picks, until I discovered  the JAZZ III, now everything is easy, from sweep to good riff… now never lacks one in my wallet, in my trousers and one in house.

I had always played classic and alt rock, but one day I played my friends guitar and he had a jazz 3 ultex pick. I mean, it looked cool and everything, but it made it almost effortless to sweep and go from string to string, I never drop them, and it sounds really good, the tone is round and organic and the pinch harmonics come naturally. after i play them, its always a little hard to go back to standard picks. they’re awesome for jazz and fusion, but i also use them for rock solos and whatnot

I remember the first time I tried a Jazz III.  I was trying out guitars at a local music store and went up to the front counter like usual to get a pick out of the free picks tin.  In amongst a bunch of regular sized picks of different brands and gauges was this little red pick.  I thought it looked interesting and took it out and started to play.  Immediately I noticed something was different and special about this pick.  It almost made me feel like a better player in that instant.   For the quite a while I never knew anyone else who used the pick and thought I was the only one.  Now knowing how many guitar icons and some of my personal heros use these picks makes me even more honored to play with them.
Since then I have never gone back to a regular sized pick.  I currently use the old faithful red nylon pick but I also love the Ultex Jazz III.

    Long Live the Jazz III

I have worked as a pro musician and guitar teacher for many years, and I have used almost every type of pick made. (I’m an expert panelist on AllExperts.com for “Guitar” and “Electric Guitar” with the highest reader ratings!  My link is here: http://www.allexperts.com/ep/3419-74256/Electric-Guitars/Ross.htm )  I experimented for a time with the Dunlop Ultex picks and liked the attack and precision, but hated the overall feel and the “slickness” of the pick.  I first tried the Eric Johnson model Jazz III and fell immediately in love with the tone and feel.  I noticed an immediate change in my picking; sweeps more accurate and every note has a brilliant voice.  I currently use the extra stiff black Jazz III.  I have to say that others are entirely correct:  once you get used to this pick nothing else feels right.  I use a lot of hybrid picking in my own music and love the way the Jazz III is unobtrusive for this style.  I also must echo Mick Thompson in saying it just “goes where you put it.”  No stray notes; this pick is really accurate.  Nothing else comes close!

they’re just so easy to use and accurate. they may have taken a little amount of adjustment time, but now i can’t even think about using anything else. i preach them to my friends every chance i get. i don’t quite remember the first time i used them, i know that i looked at the list of players using them and was like “well we’ve got something here”. i think it was John Petrucci, Shawn Lane, and Eric Johnson that principally inspired me to pick up a pack.

    My favorite pick!

  • ONEMANDEATHGRIND

Being a huge fan of Yngwie Malmsteen since his first solo album, I wanted to learn about everything he was using to get his tone. I was given a cream color Affinty Strat for my birthday, in which I installed his YJM pickups in it. I also grabbed his signature overdrive pedal when it first came out and became a fan of his picks, the 1.14″ Delrins (purple).  Though my guitar styles and tastes have changed throughout the years, that pick stayed the same. UNTIL, I saw Michael Angelo Batio’s SPEED KILLS video!! And shortly after that, the 2007 issue of Guitar World that did a whole article on The Cult of JAZZ III !!!!!  I sped down to my local store and grabbed what I could, which was only a package of the red ones. I understood soon afterwards the power and passion for these picks. They are precise and unforgiving in any lack of technique you may have. And they WILL make you a better player.  Since then, I was able to find the black ones and haven’t gone back since.  Not only do I keep them in my gig bag and my wallet (to have on hand when I visit Guitar Center!), but I also keep them in the car and practice my picking and gripping technique while I drive!! Yeah, I’m a little nuts about these!  I have since moved on to playing more blues and jazz, and these little wonders are with me every step of the way.  THANK YOU DUNLOP!!!!!!

In the beginning when I started playing guitar I started with Yellow .73mm Tortex pick spotted from a Megadeth poster. After about a year I switched to a little thicker one; Green .88mm Tortex pick because James Hetfield used one. Next came 2mm. White Tortex Sharp because I saw something similar in an Yngwie Malmsteen REH video. It was a little big but I liked the thikness and the sharper tip. A friend of mine used Jazz sized pick and I felt that it was a lot more agile and when I went to shop for one I stumbled upon this Red Jazz III pick that had it all: thikness, stifness, tip and smaller size. After a while I found out about the black one (this was time before the internet) and stuck with it for maybe ten years. I discovered the Ultex Jazz III when it was introduced couple years back and it’s the best pick ever produced – Shredtastic! I would really like to see it in glow in the dark colors.

One day, i was listening to my teacher said: “hey when I was like 14 someone gave me this Pick, and Its perfect i have never stop using it” i look for the pick on almost every store and i couldnt found it (i live in venezuela theres no jazz III Picks here) and then i went to a Pretty small rock store, and I saw it in a table, Its the most expensive pick I have ever bought, but when i get home and start Playing, it was an unique experience, and I understood what was my teacher talking about. I still have that pick, I have never found another one, After my guitar, that pick is my most precious treasure

  • Hammanx

I found my first one on the floor after The Dillinger Escape Plan gig in Dublin; I still have it as that is THE pick I’ve been looking for for years; bought another bunch of them later on and honestly I cannot really see myself going back to any other picks.

I was into using ‘bangla picks’, what my friend, Arindam, says. Magic happened when he gifted me a couple of Eric Johnson Jazz IIIs. It’s playability and gripping took my interest in guitar playing to another level. From then on my ‘bangla picks’ are rolling in the dust and I have vowed to roll my Jazz III over the six strings for the rest of my life.

The first time I came across the Jazz III was at a friends house, I’d been using the Tortex 1.14mm since the dawn of time and it was for all I knew part of my tone and always would be. I go through picks after around 3 hours of solid playing so my friend handed me this little red thing and i’m thinking “are you serious? what is that?” After 5 mins of getting used to the size difference I was loving this pick everything felt better, played better even sounded better. Been using them instead of my Tortex 1.14′s for a month now and i’ve fully converted, I don’t leave the house without one let alone play guitar with anything else. When I first heard my friend say using the Jazz III is like a cult I laughed it off and asked what he was on, now I swear by them!!
