Guitar: Usually when one breaks or they start to look real bad.

Bass: Have I? Ever? maybe once?

  • Herald

I change my strings every other month probably even longer. I should do it more often.

  • Mcconnellskeep

I change my strings about once every 6 months on the acoustic guitar.

  • Paul

I change my strings once every day :)
No, not really, I’m not made of money. I change every six months or whenever they snap.

I go about 6 months.  I read an article about 20 years ago that the only time Eric Clapton changes strings is when he breaks one!  I don’t know if this is still true.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sandy-Aphid/100001448893164 Sandy Aphid

Once or twice a year, or if I run across an incredible new kind of string, or sometimes an artist recommendation, I’ll go… yeah, maybe I need some of those, and I’ll restring all my guitars at that point.  I think old strings sound nice, but I like the bright sound of new strings once in a while.

  • Frank

I change my strings every few months. Been using the Heavy Cores and they last.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1076201167 Paul Licke

Every 3 months, should do it sooner, I can usually tell now after playing if the sound drops, time to replace

  • CaseyC088

whenever they get really dirty or start to sound too dull..

  • Aston L

Whenever I have a new gig coming up. If I don’t have any gigs coming up, whenever they get very dirty or start to sound really dull and not to standard.

  • Steve

I love that new string feel and sound so I always clean my strings every time I play (the ultraglide 65 string cleaner and conditioner is great). After my tone gets a little too dull I’ll switch them up or boil them once or twice.

  • Mokignr4e

When my strings don’t have that nice chimy and sparkle sound i change them, and of course, i use Dunlop 11s :D

  • http://twitter.com/NielsBeier Niels Vinbech Beier

I used to change my strings about every 14 days, and every day between gigs; then I changed to Dunlop Heavy Core strings; nothing beets the feel of brand new strings, and the Dunlop Heavy Core’s stay nice, fresh and clean for extremely long, so even though cash is short they still sound and feel great! They can go for months without loosing their tone and without getting filled with dirt, sweat and all the dead skin from my fingers. Although, I still change them every month, and before a gig, I don’t really need to do so for 6 months at least!

  • Guitarzan95

  • David Hill

I don’t restring my instruments as often as I should I know but I do try to at least change them out about every 4-6 months & it has a lot to do with what types of weather conditions as far the heat & cold they are exposed to,however if they start to sound dull or flat I try to keep a new set of strings handy just in case I break one or don’t like the sound they are producing.

    every year

  • Thomas_kar

Probably twice a year on each guitar. Sometimes more often due to gigs and such.

    Bi Weekly atleast

  • Bluesazul

    Every two months

  • http://www.facebook.com/marcdavid.cohn Marcdavid Cohn

i simply go by tone, but average every 2-3 months.

  • Priscillaplatz

About every 6 months for my guitar and once a year for my bass.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=749553184 Charles Neal Cross

Acoustic strings get changed every week. Bass and Electric strings get changed every two weeks, or if they start to get flat. I play a lot and am addicted to the perfect tone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jeffreywcoleman Jeffrey Coleman

I have multiple basses, so at most every 6 months.  I have a drawer full of Jim Dunlop strings!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=514166302 David Marsh

I change my strings on my acoustic every 1 – 1 1/2 months and on the electric when they start to sound bad.

  • Katie koontz

I change my strings usually once every two weeks because I am playing for so long and so often…

  • Chris

every few months depending on tone

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-James-Courtney/1494489657 Andrew James Courtney

    every 2 months or so.

  • Synthetic

every 2 weeks. Of course I play em all every day

  • http://www.facebook.com/gwflet Greg Fletcher

    Every 2 months usually.

  • Wes

I change about every 2 weeks to 1 month between string changes. I don’t like when the strings brightness starts to be diminished and dull, it makes everything I play sound like poop. I also don’t like when the string starts to corrode because of sweat and grease from my fingertips.

  • VerrucktsAl

i usually change them once one string snaps on the guitar so that’s about every 2-3 weeks.

  • Ryan Fletcher

    Probably 10 times a year

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1567434477 Jack Williamson

    Cool stuff..

  • GARY VICUNA

I change my Dunlop strings on my acoustic every 4 months after the strings sound dull without life. On my electric every 4-5 months. After I play every time on both, I always wipe down the strings, it gives them more life & more sound depth. I always use Dunlop strings on both, because DUNLOP IS THE BEST!!!

  • JaredLBoyd

Ummm well lets see I kill strings because I have really oily skin.  Usually after one playing if I don’t wipe them down then will be rusted some next time I take it out.

  • Weezykid

About once ever 3 -4 months.

  • Andriy Fedorov

    every 3-4 weeks

  • Brendan Kong

    Exactly 5 weeks.

  • Jboyer6

I change my strings maybe every month… just love the feel and sound… just like fresh linens

  • shane

when one of them breaks, or when they won’t stay in tune / intonated any more. I love the sound of new strings but I can’t afford to change them all the time..

  • canecps

Every two Months… Would like to change them more often but that gets expensive…

  • http://www.facebook.com/ilyinskiy Alexander Ilyinskiy

    every month

  • http://www.facebook.com/peter.vanhulst Peter van Hulst

about twice  year, unless, am still a novice… lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/david.blanton David Blanton

Depends on what strings I’m using and how much play they’re getting.  If it’s  a standard non-coated string I can make it 3-4 weeks with moderate play.

It’s funny, I’m prone to hand sweat but as I refine my fretting technique to play more relaxed, my hand sweats less and teh strings last longer.

  • Kathy Henson

About once a month on average

  • Flavio Catalano

On the electrics I change the strings once in a month, on the acoustic once in a couple of months but as a rule of thumb… when I need a change! :) )

  • Chris Genral96

every six months because the tone of the string starts to die after a while due to skin being caught in between the windings.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QGP5ETWHDXRESGFNAZEW276W7U wesley

once a month to the day. there is a certain crispy sound i listen for and when that is no longer there the string is dead and as much as i play that is about a month. was even shorter time between strings till i started using the heavy core dunlop strings.

  • Alejandro

I really depends on what the guitar is sounding like, but i would have to say once a month. For acoustic a lot of months or until they snap, i like the sound they produce when their a number of months old compared to right out of the packaging.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=627541126 Anne Bussell

When I break one. Maybe once every 6 months or so.

  • Edward

I usually get 3-4 mos. out of a set of strings before I change them, Sometimes more or less depending on how often I’m playing. I don’t break many strings and have good body chemistry, so my strings don’t feel or sound grungy too quickly.

  • Beshmonger

before a show. before recording. when one breaks.

  • Matthew Poitras

When the grime starts to mix with the blood, it’s string changing time.

  • Jessegruenberg

I like to change my strings everytime i feel they sound worn or dead at all.

  • Aaronagis

    every 2 weeks

  • Joelcarter85

I change mine when I can afford it. I sweat a lot and it wrecks them up quick.

  • Cody90

I change them every 5 months.

  • Jaymzrock

Every 2-3 months, or once they start deadening or losing reliability

  • Buddy K. Topeka KS

Atleast once a month sometimes more if im changing tuning alot.

  • http://www.facebook.com/stevenfarless Steven Farless

Every two months for my electric. Once a month for my acoustic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1613021616 Nick Spine

    about every 3 months

  • Harrys07

Depends what quality of guitar string I get, but probably every 6 months.

  • Randy Kirkpatrick

I change my strings every few weeks when I’m playing regularly. Sometimes up to a few months when I’m not.

  • Damonthedude

maybe once or twice a month. about as often as i go through picks

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Justin-Sawhill/100002395991448 Justin Sawhill

Only when they sound dull.  This occurs at very different intervals on my different guitars, probably due to the favoritism I give to certain ones.

  • http://twitter.com/oprim Operated Imagination

    usually every 2-3 month :D

  • Petepie08

when used other brands i would change them after every gig but now i use dunlops they last for ever…!! so now i have actually forgotten how to change strings..;0)

  • http://www.facebook.com/justinnewell Justin Newell

I change mine about every 3 weeks if I’m not on the road and about every 8 shows if we’re touring.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Wendel/1467318498 Christopher Wendel

Hard to tell that one, I have 17 guitars

  • George

    Every month

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001531753879 Sli Ck

    About every 3-4 weeks

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1366813972 Josh Puppie Daley

    4-6 Months

  • Kgmf72

I would be changing strings on two guitars this morning if my Dunlop 6-Pack of strings that I ordered from Musicians Friend over two months ago had been delivered. They’ve been on 2 1/2 months, and with a gig Saturday, will be changed today .

  • Michaelanthonysanford

i change my strings when i break my bottoms and my tops dry out

  • clay pren

    every month

  • http://trueliberty.us icecycle66

    I keep three guitars.

On one I keep some old dead nickle plated strings.  i don’t even remember what brand they were.

On the other two I keep the strings pretty fresh.  On one guitar I keep reasonably fresh steel strings.  I don’t change them often because they are naturally so bright.

On the last guitar I change the strings all the damn time. After about 16 hours of play time i swap the strings.  I like to keep fresh nickles on this one.

  • david

    every 2-3 months

  • Pickers1987

I change my strings about once a month

  • Daniel O’Shea

I change my strings about once i year i think

  • Grovejj

Once every two weeks. I play 4 hours a day because the guitar is my journal. It’s what I relate to the most in life and I give everything into making life fun as much as playing guitar means to me.

Dunlop 10′s are my choice for life and not a lot of people commit to something for life.

  • James Klein

    every 2-3 months

  • Steven

I have a new string saver cleaning tool, usually when one breaks or the tone is dull, I decide to change, thanks!

  • Fotsband74

Usually once a month or so, if needed.  I also wipe each string down with isopropyl alchohol before playing, careful not to get any on the fretboard of my Les Paul.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wolf-Lacey/1210864053 Wolf Lacey

I buy guitars for the particular sound.  I look for uniqueness to match vocals and moods as I get into my music.  I make certain I know the brand of strings on there and if they lose sound after twenty hours, I begin looking for the same or mellower sound in other brands.  Once I find I never change brands.
