While my main guitar for many years has been a Fender Stratocaster, I also use Gibsons (Les Paul, SG, etc.) for different sounds. I can’t really choose between the two, both are great tools, and I use each for different sounds, and different songs.

  • Kat

There is just something about the tone of a Gibson that Fender doesn’t touch. They both have their pros and cons but as far as a personal preference for sound? I have to go with Gibson.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sam.robertson.146 Sam Robertson

I prefer Gibson Les Paul’s because they get very good bass tones, and I tend to play a lot of bass heavy rhythm.

  • Kat

Make & model? Gotta be Les Paul Custom Studio.

  • JeffG

I like the sound of GIbson Les Pauls, but the feel of Fender Strats…Of course, the Fender sound and Gibson feel aren’t terrible on their own, that’s my preference. The Gibson Pauls with 50′s necks feel great, and you have to have double humbuckers on it for that thick tone. On strats, I prefer maple fingerboards due to the extra brightness (if I’m going for a twangy country sound that night). The slight Vs on the strats are the best….but not the card V…just a little slope to wrap my thumb around….

  • salmonline

Fenders and Fender-type guitars appeal to the DYI-er in me. They are easy to work on and there are millions of after-market pieces and parts to choose from. Very versatile and easy to work on.

Fender vs Gibson?? I love both, but probably because of ‘force of habit’ over the years, I mostly play Gibson. I do own a couple of Fender’s, which I play when I’m in the mood, but I almost always naturally gravitate to my Les Paul or my SG. I think that the difference between the two though has lessened dramatically over the last 20 or 30 years, because of innovations such as those of Eddiie Van Halen and Jimmy Page…. all good! And remember, if Eddie hadn’t of had access to BOTH Gibson AND Fender style parts, Frankenstein would have NEVER BEEN BORN!!

  • mark walker

I have and use telecasters, Strats and Les Pauls, but the telecaster seems more like an extension of myself. Even tho the others have a wider sonic capability

  • http://www.facebook.com/waltlucas Walt Lucas

Have been looking for a replacement for my CITI2 Hardwire overdrive, oooh I think I just found it!
Very rich, fat tone. Well done MXR.

  • scsgtusmc

I prefer the Fender Telecaster. The sound just gives you butterfly’s in the stomach.

  • Charlie Bacinelli

I have always gravitated towards Gibsons, though to be honest I think it is because my personal guitar heroes used a Gibson. My two main guitars are an SG and an ES-335. I have come to absolutely love the 57 classic humbucker sound.

Jackson, Play the best, fuck the rest.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kpetchler Kelly Petchler

I’ve always been a fender guy, firsts strats, then I fell head over heels with the telecaster. I recently bought a Gibson SG. I do love it, but it really is just my mistress. My #1 girl will always be a Telecaster.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jeremiah.lind.5 Jeremiah Lind

I have both. I have an American made Strat, and a Gibson Les Paul Studio, both from 1991. I like them both for different things depending what I am playing. Playing country style licks, I like the strat. Same for rhythm sections of rock songs and treble leads. For clean songs, folk style, finger picking and what not, I like the Les. I also really like the Les for Rock and Metal leads. Some people have a really strong preference, but I think it is all about how they are used and how they fit with what you are playing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rusty.teasdale Rusty Teasdale

I’m a Gibson guy. My Les Paul is the first guitar I grab every time.

  • http://www.facebook.com/vance.vallenari Vance Vallenari

the pedal is named correctly,BadAss tone!Nice pickin Mr. DePrato.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Meyer/100002215574769 Andrew Meyer

If I specifically had to choose between Fender and Gibson? I’d probably choose Gibson. Learned to play on a Gibson acoustic from the 40s, and the first electric I ever played was my dad’s ’90s LP studio. I do believe Gibsons are overpriced though, so I go for Epiphone; I’m currently in the process of overhauling an Epiphone ’58 tribute Explorer. Gonna replace ALL the electronics, and the entire bridge assembly. My brand of choice is PRS though, I mainly got the Explorer as a project guitar (and cuz it just looks so damn good!).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=643690988 Kevin L. Gibbs

I like them both for different reasons, but if I had to choose….Fender American Standard Strat is always a good way to for it’s diversity and adaptability. :D

  • David Jurickovich

The last fifteen years or so ive been playing Gibson’s .Cause they are solid !!!!!!!I would play a nice american strat but i dont own one right now……working on my pedalboard .Just need the MXR bad ass OD and Distortion to complete it and have an all Dunlop /Mxr pedalboard…….

  • http://www.facebook.com/dave.stackable Dave Stackable

It is way too hard to make a distinction between the two.

  • matt powell

Gibson all the way !! Fender can’t touch that beautiful deep punch you in the face tone and bottom that you get from a Gibson. I owned a fender strat years back for a short bit , but ended up trading it for a les Paul. My favorite has to be my 89 Gibson les Paul custom , with active 81 ,85 emg’s. Can’t beat it , Gibson all the way !!!!

  • Greg Daust

I use both for different “COLORS” & MOOD !!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Berger/1165341977 Paul Berger

    Fender Strat………..clarity and crunch!!

  • Frank B

Both! Gibson Les Paul Gothic and a Squier Strat HSS, all SD pickups. Love my Les Paul because its massive sounding for metal, my Strat for blues and hard rock

  • http://www.facebook.com/travis.ried Travis Ried

I personally love my Les Paul Jr. So right now I’d have to go with Gibson. It has a very comfortable neck, and it sounds big and full. With the roll of a volume control it can go from a nice even rhythm sound, and a great lead tone. Although I own both the Jr. is my “every gig” guitar.

  • http://www.facebook.com/maurice.pringle.7 Maurice Pringle

I prefer the strat, its a little more versitile. Although i still love the punch of a Paul!

  • Ben Foster

Fender and Gibson are both so diverse from each other. Id probably go with Gibson if I had to choose. But hey if somebody threw me a strat, that would make my day!

  • Dan

Gibson les paul doublecut. Better tone and playability for rock. Thick ass tone! Can you hear the sustain?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1567434477 Jack Williamson

While i have owned and played both, I personally prefer the Gibson Les Paul. I prefer the sound, and more importantly, the feel. It just feels natural to me, more so than a Fender..

  • Gerald Good

Fender Jazzmasters and Jaguars. Although some of the design features are a little wonky compared to a Strat or Tele, the body is far more comfortable for me to play. I also like Gibsons, but mostly the semi-hollow guitars. I also use my trem bar a lot and don’t like Bigsby’s, as the arm is too short for my tastes. Hence going with the Fender designs most of the time.

  • Andy

    Vintage fender strat!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000008344395 David Kamayor

STRATS TELES STRATS TELES STRATS TELES

  • http://www.facebook.com/BoothSean Sean Booth

Fender Strat. That Is Just A Great Place To Start Your Sound. Build It And Customize With Gear And Pedals To Personalize, But The Strat Is Just A Great Starting Point.

  • Wendell Sexson

I like both Gibson and Fender guitars, but if I were only allowed to have one I would pick Fender. I like Strats and other Fender guitars, but if I were only allowed to have one I would pick a Telecaster. It is a classic everything you need and nothing you don’t design.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brandon.marsella Brandon Marsella

love both, but you cant beat the warmth and thick tone of the humbuckers on a les paul.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shane.huckeba.5 Shane Huckeba

I’ve been a gibson guy since day one of playing. That being said I picked up a strat almost two years ago, and I get it. It’s an amazing guitar.

  • a moran

Gibson all the way. Fender has some good guitars out there, but to me, nothing compares to the classic sound of a Gibson. The model would be Gibson SG Reissue. It’s light weight, looks really good, has a great sound, feel and can be used for any genre. If the prices were cheaper on Gibson they would be in my guitar collection.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alejandro-Aldana/683878171 Alejandro Aldana

i enjoy both guitar brands. stratocaster for fender and for gibson, a les paul.

  • http://www.facebook.com/felipejohnperez Felipe J. Perez

Starts are my favorite, I have 2!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.becker.796 Kevin Becker

I have to say fender although I love the tone of a les paul Ive always played strats and or strat style guitars

  • Dan Newman

Gibson Sg elegant quilt top. I mean come on, just look at it and compare it to ANY fender.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.barnum1 Andrew Barnum

My favorite guitar is a GIbson Explorer style LTD. I get along well with the scale length and the way it hangs on a strap.

  • http://www.facebook.com/william.hudson.88 William Hudson

Fender Strat. Has my tone. Those single coils are great for adding effects. Most of my favorites play Strats. Gibson Les Paul is good too, except for the high prices- keep it. Seriously: Gilmour, Blackmore, Trower, Beck, Clapton, Hendrix, and more found Fender Strats as their main axe.

  • Jason McKay

Fender Telecaster. You can play any genre.
    Led Zeppelin – classic rock
    NOFX – punk
    Mike Stern – jazz fusion
    Any country guy
    Frank Black
    John5
    Mike Campbell

  • http://www.facebook.com/adam.abelson Adam Abelson

i’m just now (last few months) making the switch to a strat from a les paul,..and really digging the strat A LOT! it’s a lighter guitar with a whole host of tone possibilities i am still uncovering, like peeling back the layers of an onion! Your Custom Badass ’78 Distortion would probably sound great with my new (to me) ’04 strat!

  • daveminda

I can’t choose a favorite – sorry. To me, it’s like coffee and beer. I love ‘em both – I NEED them both! They each taste great and make me feel great. So do the Strat and the Paul. It sometimes just depends on my mood. And, to settle another old score, the Les Paul also sounds great clean (it’s not just a crunch machine), and the Strat sounds great overdriven (not just the clean machine).

  • http://www.facebook.com/jeff.hopkins.9887 Jeff Hopkins

If I had to choose only one electric guitar, it would have to be a Gibson 1959 Reissue Les Paul Standard

  • macaddyct

Lately it has been a PRS Starla w/ Bigsby

  • WT

Strat for me. Love the quack and with tone control on bridge that helps when using od pedals and eliminates some of the ‘ice-pick’ sound you get some times..

  • Don L

Got to be a Les Paul. Jimmy Page all the way!!

  • Joseph M

I complain about my Mexican Strat a lot – mostly because I dream of expensive Rickenbackers that moan and jangle (as well as infinitely modifiable Jazzmasters) – but, hell, it’s about as versatile as any guitar out there. I’ve played jazz, bossa nova, blues, country, and Polvo-style mathy noise on that thing and it always gets the job done. Though I love Les Pauls and Casinos, there’s something beautiful about the Strat’s ability to be (nearly) all things to all people at a humane price. So: I’m siding with Fender on this one.

  • Ben Sher

Fender, and a Jazzmaster at that. The versatility on that guitar beats all of the others by a landslide.

  • Gabe

honestly neither, but if i had to choose… gibson. exlporer. shes a beaut.

  • mike alan

Fender! Leo Fender = innovator. My 1st guitar was a CBS Strat, which I miss daily & recall the neck was super comfy. Back then, I tried a friend’s old Gibson SG, didn’t like the tone & hated the feel even more. When I think Gibson, I think of Angus Young, Zakk Wylde … not a fan of either sound … at all. When it comes to Fender, I’m reminded of Eric Johnson & Jeff Beck, both of whom I put at the top when it comes to tone. As for fave model, I pass on the more expensive Gibsons in favor of a Fender Strat that I hope to own: Artist Series Yngwie Malmsteen! I scalloped the fretboard to experiment on a beater & love the feel.

  • John F

Fender or Gibson? That’s impossible to answer. So my answer is Ibanez!

  • Blooze

Fender Strat all the way for me. The necks are just more comfortable for me than my LP’s.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brent.h.stewart Brent Stewart

I like the tones of a Fender Strat best. I can get funk, grit, or round blues tones, and, roll off a bit of treble and I’m good for jazz.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Scott-Harris/1310455366 Scott Harris

My favorite is the Fender Telecaster followed by the Fender Strat. I guess I must just like the single coil sound the best.

  • Rbond

Gibson. I have an SG Standard. I love the darker tone of a Gibson. Plus, you can’t beat the classic double horn design of an SG.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mikael.heck Mikael Heck

I really like the look and feel of a Gibson 335. The tone, feel, and sexiness are just sweet. That said, I am currently playing a MIM Fender Telecaster as my main rig. I love that too. But, if I had to pick, I would go with the 335.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bob-Herrmann/100000433087623 Bob Herrmann

Gibson for me, thank you. Particularly the ES335 although a nice Les Paul will work in a pinch. To me the dual humbuckers just sound better than single coils.

  • surroundguy

I’ve owned several Fenders and one Les Paul Gold Top over the years. The Fenders were a Mustang, Jaguar, Jazzmaster (all pre-1973) and a 1976 Strat. I bought the Les Paul used around 1975 and didn’t like it at all because of the weight. It was like wearing a big log around your neck. While I liked the output levels compared to the Fenders, and the tone, I hated the weight, so it was sold in a couple of days after purchase. I had the Strat hot-wired by famous luthier Renaldo of Pastori Music in Union City NJ (built guitars for Johnny Winter and Greg Allman). The Strat is SO much more versatile than the Les Paul with the iconic tones you can draw from it (out-of-phase, 3 pickups versus 2, whammy bar, etc.) and with the hot, split-coil Seymour Duncan pickups, It sounds just like a vintage Strat with the pickups in the half wiring position and is totally balls-out in the full coil position (as much as any Les Paul). Hands down the Strat is my favorite guitar!

  • http://www.facebook.com/paul.the.deadman Paul Oblong

I have an old Gibson Les Paul. I bought it off a guy who had no idea what he had. Before that I used some old mid 80′s BC Rich guitars and a couple Ibanez strats. I’ve played a good number of Fenders too. But This Les Paul won me over.It has the dirty heavy fuzzy sound that puts the Retro in my Retro Metal.

  • Tim Lindquist

Fender Strat SSH, more comfortable, more flexible, more options for tone. And it’s all about the tone!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Justin-Sawhill/100002395991448 Justin Sawhill

I prefer Gibson slightly because I know of fewer corporate evils they’ve involved themselves in than Fender. I do no like either.

  • Howard Gabriel

I prefer the Les Paul because of the heavy tone over the quack.

  • Bill Santner

They are two separate tools. A start and a led Paul can do it all but each excels at different things. If I had to pick one though it’d be the Gibson les Paul.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002215389750 Bill Haines

Man, I would sure like to get my hands on some MXR BADASS PEDALS.Nice video James Deprato

  • Terry Harvey

Les Paul all the way. I have mine outfitted with Dimarzio Evolutions. The combo of the tone woods with high output humbuckers is tone heaven. Sparkling cleans and signal enough to send any preamp into saturation.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000856525351 Gregory Bodish

Gibson Les Paul pure unadulterated awesome tone

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002215389750 Bill Haines

Why is every one commenting on guitars when the discussion is all about the MXR Overdrive and MXR 78′ Distortion Badass pedals? Its obvious no one watched the video because there to busy commenting on what guitar they prefer. BEST WISHES TO ALL THE EMPLOYEES AT JIM DUNLOP AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

  • http://www.facebook.com/guildgtr Jason Crow

Telecaster with a 4-way switch! Puts the neck and bridge in series when in position 4. The best of Fender with a little Gibson spice thrown in. Love the simplicity and versatility of Telecasters. You learn how to truly work your volume and tone with a Tele!!!

  • Steven

If I could only have only it would be a Gibson Les Paul, but love Fenders too.

  • MrScooter65

Having played & owned guitars from both Fender & Gibson, I’ve now leaned more toward Telecasters because they fit my tendonitus fretting hand better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/michael.payne.9 Michael Payne

A combo of the two is ideal, but if I have to choose I’d have to go with Fender. I feel like it easier to work on a Fender if something goes wrong. I also feel that I’m not paying a “Brand Tax” with their prices. My favorite model was the Showmaster they had a few years back.

  • clark

fender, mainly strats and jaguars. i really like the versatility of the stratocaster and fender guitars seem to feel more comfortable and suit my tone better.

  • TL

I like cheaper Fender MIM Teles because I can beat them up and give them some love without feeling like I’m destroying a pristine, thousand-dollar investment. Plus they sound nice!

  • GUSS

Gibson Les Paul, so many styles of music can be played with that thing!

  • http://www.facebook.com/mongo1 Scott Cain

I prefer the Tele’s simplicity and the fact that the MIMs are cheap and good.

  • Jared

Love the Gibson Les Pauls for the monster rock and roll tones you get but also like Fender Teles for smokin smokin blues tones.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tony.taravella.3 Tony Taravella

I prefer the Gibson Les Paul Sunburst. The Les Paul has a beautiful full, dark tone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/steve.kheboian Steve Kheboian

Fender, because 3 pickups on a strat gives more tonal options

  • Andrew

Gibson/Epiphone…nice rich sounding humbuckers and the heavier body makes for a great sound.

  • https://www.facebook.com/troy.aaron.7 Troy Callaway

I am a Fender guy but I do like the idea of the newer Les Paul standards with coil tapping and phase switching it seems very versatile although I haven’t gotten the chance to play one yet

  • Stan A

Fender Strat. Comparing Fender and Gibson to me is like comparing Android and i Phones. There are so many ways to modify a Stat, just like a Droid where as the Les Paul is more of a need to leave it the way it is like an iPhone.

  • Michael

A hand-built strat modeled after a 59 Fender. A one piece solid body and great, vintage-spec’d pickups really make it sing!

  • http://twitter.com/de_facto_Stevo Steven Ortega

Im torn. Might hav to go with a Gibson Les Paul. So beautiful and so powerful.

  • Cait Brennan

Each has their place–if I’m playing country or Americana I wouldn’t be without my Tele–but overall, the Gibson Les Paul has the tone I love best.

  • Cait Brennan

Each has their place–if I’m playing country or Americana I wouldn’t be without my Tele–but overall, the Gibson Les Paul has the tone I love best.

  • Adam Holmok

There’s an absolute need for both. I think a lot of people start
out Fender because of the price and availability.

  • http://twitter.com/mainaxe Derek Sasaki

Gibson Les Paul Standard of course ! I love the sound of two humbuckers ! And the feel and tone of the combined tonewoods !

  • http://www.facebook.com/john.peterson.718 John Peterson

I would have to choose a Gibson Les Paul Studio, it is more versatile than the strat as far as tone, I think you can get more tones from the paul, and the neck just fits my hand better, actually it does all just come down to personal preferance.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nght5tlkr Brian So

    Fender Stratocaster–much more versatility

  • Anonymous

fender . . . right now, tele over strat but not always. playability and a little bit tone. also, i prefer single volume and tone controls. maple necks are nice and snappy.

  • http://twitter.com/GodsOfTheEarth Eric Cox

Dominus Custom Guitars is my choice!

  • Dave

Fender. No specific model. I’m a Clapton and SRV fan.

  • http://twitter.com/McGruff666 Barry Mcgrath

Gibson Dethklock Explorer. This guitar just sings, and its super easy on the eyes too.
