The career of Shelton Hank Williams III, aka Hank 3, has doubled as a sort of crusade in which he breaks all the rules of country music while honoring its traditions at the same time. As he puts it, “Everybody calls themselves outlaws and all that stuff, but that’s what’s missing in country music. Everything’s so clean and pretty and perfect, and you need a couple of people in there that aren’t perfect and that don’t sound the best. That’s the way some of the best guys were, man.”

Hank 3 brought his touring outfit to San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom recently and tore the roof off the place, supporting the 4 cds of music he released on his new label Hank 3 Records earlier this month. A double CD of outlaw country called Ghost to a Ghost/Guttertown, another of stoner/doom metal called Attention Deficit Domination, and one more that pairs speed metal with the vocals of auctioneers from around the country titled 3 Bar Ranch Cattle Callin.

Hank 3 put on one helluva 3 hour show. Starting with his outlaw country, melding into his hellbilly stoner/doom set,  and finishing off the night with a speed metal thrash pit extravaganza that left the sold-out crowd exhausted, sweaty and crying for more.
