I usually play a vintage strat into a ts-9, tremolo pedal and/or zvex lo-fi junky, a little delay, and of course have a vintage crybaby for when I need it!

I’d have to pick Tom Morello’s setup:
Dunlop Crybaby – Boss Tremolo – DigiTech Whammy – Boss Digital Delay – DOD EQ – MXR Phaser

My all time favorite setup is what I have now, which is pretty simple. I have a Peavey 5150-II that I have modified. It now has a Mercury Magnetics choke, and a mixture of 1960′s-era Telefunken and some 1980′s Phillips JAN preamp tubes. I also beefed up the overall tone of the amp with a mod to the power amp tube bias section. This amp sounds very much like an old Marshall; way better than stock. I play a ’69 Les Paul with Dimarzio pickups–an old (early 80′s) PAF that I modified to have an Alnico II magnet, and a PAF-Pro in the neck position. I use Planet Waves cables into a Boss DD-5 delay and a Dunlop Crybaby From Hell wah pedal. That’s it, pretty simple, but man it packs a punch! Overall, it has a very good Govt Mule/Warren Haynes, Zeppelin, AC/DC sort of vibe. I love it!

  • WT

Eric Johnson’s pedalboard setup. What a mess, but I like it.

  • Don L

Jimi Hendrix. Simple but to the point.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alan.thompson.7106 Alan Thompson

I think Jimi Hendrix’s modest pedal chain produced some classic sounds: Univibe, Vox Wah, Fuzz Face, and Octavia. Along with that Strat, and a cranked Marshall, he made some amazing sounds.

  • John F

It’s gotta be Eddie Van Halen’s setup. He got both really thick, space-filling rhythm tones and singing leads from the same rig.

  • Bill Santner

I’d say a led Paul to a wah pedal to a compressor to a distortion to a delay to a marshal amp. Lots of options and a great sound!

  • MrScooter65

This basic chain works for me, most times: tuner, compressor, distortion, chorus, delay.

  • Curmudgeon

    A simple setup.. volume pedal–>wah–>overdrive–>delay–>amp

  • Blooze

I’d say one of of my favorite setups is Ritchie Kotzens. Simple RIF with a Crybaby, vibrato/term switcher, phaser, distortion, and a Holy Grail reverb.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kpetchler Kelly Petchler

My current setup, which is pretty badass: Crybaby Classic > Analogman Beano Boost > Analogman King of Tone > Earthquaker Devices Hoof > Voodoo Labs Tremolo > Boss DD7 > EH Holy Grail > Boss TU2

  • Blooze

    Stupid autocorrect :)

chris poland’s effect chain is pretty awesome.

  • Logan

Joe Bonamassa’s rig (solo or bcc) is very impressive.

Crybaby 535Q>Pod xt pro>Fender hotrod deville 2×12″ … Or PA

  • daveminda

I’ve got to say: either Eric Johnson’s rig (which involves Fender, Marshall, and Dumble amps, several overdrives, flangers, and fuzzes, plus delay and wah) or Angus Young’s rig (which involves plugging an SG into a cranked Marshall). Two totally different rigs, two totally badass tones!

  • Terry Harvey

Just finished my my rig, Les Paul/G&L ASAT Special, VP Jr, Wylde wah, CAE MC 402 Mxr phase 90, Black Label Chorus into Fender Blues Deluxe. All the tones I ever wanted.

  • TL

Probably Nels Cline’s rig…his Jazzmasters into his huge pedalboard into his cool custom Schreoder amp! So cool!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=643690988 Kevin L. Gibbs

As long as we’re dreaming….anything David Gilmore is running is epic! Which is one of the reasons anything with his name on it sells so well!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Meyer/100002215574769 Andrew Meyer

Personally I’m a fan of Joe Bonamassa’s rig. Wish I had a few vintage Marshalls just lying around like that…

Summary of my current rig: PRS CE24>Morley Tremonti wah>Joyo 6 band EQ (used to boost leads)>Egnater Tweaker 40. In the effects loop: Boss PH-2 phaser>Boss CE-5 chorus>Joyo delay. The cheap pedals are real tone suckers, but the sound from the Egnater is still pretty awesome.

  • Dave B.

My go-to guitar is usually my circa 1980 Strat–I don’ know if it’s my most bad-ass guitar, but it’s the most reliable in terms of providing gig-ready tone and staying in tune. For the rest of the rig I try to keep it as simple as possible, so when it’s feasible I only use a tuner, OD and sometimes a noise gate in front of my amp (Peavey ValveKing) and my trusty Danelectro Dan-Echo delay pedal in the effects loop. I’ll add other things (wah in front, chorus to the loop) only if they are absolutely required for particular songs. Most of the gigs I play are in musical theater, and oftentimes there’s no need to add ANY effects other than the amp’s own (excellent) distortion.

  • Thomas B.

Nobody NEEDS pedals to sound badass. There are plenty of amps out there capable of making awesome sounds on their own. But a fuckload of distortion, fuzz, and overdrive pedals sure helps…

Whatever David Gilmour uses – he gets the most amazing sounds/tones/sonic landscapes ever!

Come on now, that’s freaking amazing!!! That sound is badass and kinda gives the essence of old!!!

  • Adam Holmok

I’m like a beautiful 6′ tall 90 lb supermodel with anorexia when it comes to gear. I’m never happy. I’ve owned and or plugged into teles, strats, Yamahas, Fenders, Gibsons, Taylor’s, reissue amps, modded amps, pedals, wait list pedals.. You name it. I think what it comes down to is a never ending exhausting search for “your tone”. Your signature tone. $ always an issue… and as we all know, how well we hear, interpret, play, and creatively use the gear at hand. ‘Nuff said.. I sympathize with all who g.a.s. :)

  • clark

it’ll vary from time to time and where/what i’m playing. but i’ve always liked fulltone ocd > proco rat > orange or15

  • Dave Blake

My favorite rig is Slash-Les Paul into Crybaby into Marshall JCM 800. Classic crunch and lead tone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/steve.kheboian Steve Kheboian

I really don’t follow anyone’s rig, since mine is a cluster of other people’s sounds. Main signal path: crybaby from hell, Whammy DT, Hardwire CM-2, Big muff. FX loop: Boss CE-5, Carbon copy, Boss PH-2 or 3, MC-401. And this one’s mine, at least ideally (I don’t most of ‘em yet)

  • http://www.facebook.com/shane.huckeba.5 Shane Huckeba

Keep it simple stupid, set up the amp for a bit more gain than ACDC then roll of the volume for cleans, add an Overdrive for more grit and boost. Throw in a little modulation or wah. love it

  • http://www.facebook.com/jeremiah.lind.5 Jeremiah Lind

My absolute favorite rig setup of all time is the one used by Dimebag Darrell. I love the tones that he got and the sounds that he was able to produce. I wish I could get the sounds he got, not that I am a good enough player yet to use it.

  • ZINGALE360

I enjoy running my Les Paul Studio through my EHX Holy Grail, Boss Chorus Factory, Digitech Delay Looper through my Roland JC-120 for some warm jazz riffs. Would love to prime the pump with these two MXR pedals

Hey. I don’t know other people’s signal chains but my best tone was and Ibanez Talman with stock p-100 type pups into my repro fuzz face into my dual recto. Ended up selling that guitar but bought another years later. I don’t use the boogie anymore as it is a beast. Why haven’t i won yet. Haha. Cheers.

Les Paul plugged into the Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer then plugg into a skyscraper Marshall stack! Do it and achieve epic awesomeness!!!!

  • MetalRecordingServices

There has to be a new variation. We use VHT GP3, Marsall JMP-1, JCM 2000 DSL,Madison Divintiy II final revision,HafelrT3 etc. a little gainy snarl into amp or preamp gain can make the whole sound slightly different and player personal. For that expression that males every recording session breathe the individual performer. There is only one MXR pedal at Metal Recording Services dot com. Though the dedication to void note and chord clouding would make more very welcome.

  • http://www.facebook.com/faldridge56 Frank Aldridge

Fuzz face with the cry baby into a twin reverb with lots of vibrato of course I am playing a 335 for that deep rich tone , it doesn’t get any better then that.

Either of my two super-modified Epiphone Les Paul Customs (black&white) into my Pedaltrain Pro pedalboard loaded with a Jim Dunlop JC-95 Crybaby Cantrell and JD-4S Rotovibe then a Digitech RP1000. Plugged into my dual Behringer F1320D powererd 12″ floor monitors rated @ 300W each ; with my stereo settings…my own personal “tonal-Nirvana”. :)
