The Heil Talkbox FAQs
Q: How does the Talk Box work?
A: The Talk Box uses your mouth as an additional sound chamber, allowing you to form your sound into words and phrases. To understand this concept, first think about how you form words: air is pushed into your lungs through your vocal chords, and then you form the air in your mouth and nasal cavity to produce a different sound. The Talk Box replaces that air from your lungs with the sound of your instrument, taking the signal from your amplifier speaker output and sending it through the Talk Box’s hose.
You want the sound starting as far back in your mouth as possible, so place the hose between the teeth at the very back of your mouth. This allows you to more completely form the sound with your mouth. When you play a note, do not make any sound with your voice; all you need to do is mouth the words you want to say.
Start out by mouthing the vowels, A, E, I, O, U. The more exaggeratedly you form your mouth, the more pronounced the effect will sound. Next, work on saying words with hard consonants, such as B, D, G, J, K, P, Q, T, V (“good,” “bad,” “give,” “take”). Then move on to phrases and complete sentences, such as “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.”
Another thing you will notice is that biting down on the hose will change the sound of the effect. Biting down completely will produce no sound at all.
Q: How do I set up the Talk Box?
A:
1. Hook your guitar up to any pre-amp effects you desire (Crybaby, Fuzz Face, etc.).
2. Have the last item in your pre-amp effects go into the input of your amp head.
3. Connect a cable from the speaker out of your amp head to the input of the Talk Box. Be sure to use a heavy duty speaker cable rather than a standard guitar cable.
4. Connect your 8 ohm speaker or speaker cabinet to the output of the Talk Box.
5. Put the end of the clear tube from the Talk Box alongside your microphone so that the tube fits in your mouth near the microphone. Set your mic up as you would normally with another amp and speaker. The toggle switch on the Talk Box controls whether the sound is affected by the Talk Box or not.
You are now ready to recreate the vintage sounds of the Talk box!
Q: Can I power my pedal with a different voltage?
A: All Dunlop/MXR pedals should only be powered with the recommended voltage.
Q: Does my pedal have a true bypass?
A: Please refer to our 'True Bypass' article on our Dunlop Blog for an up-to-date list of our pedals which contain true bypass.
Q: My pedal works in bypass, but there is no signal when it’s turned on.
A: Check to ensure that your adapter or battery have the correct voltage and/or polarity. Ensure that both cables are plugged into the correct input/output jacks.
Q: Why is there a volume drop/boost when I turn on my pedal?
A: There is a possible impedance mismatch with other pedals in your effects loop. Isolate and remove the pedal from the loop to see if this still occurs.
Q: Can you repair my vintage pedal?
A: It depends on which pedal and how it has failed. Please contact our Technical Support Department as this is a case by case matter.
Q: Can I adjust the internal trim pots?
A: Not unless it is stated in the User Manual.
Q: Can I purchase an empty pedal housing?
A: Unfortunately, we do not sell our raw pedal housings.
Q: My pedal may not be working correctly. What should I do?
A: First, check the brand’s FAQ page (MXR, Way Huge, etc.) to see if the issue has already been addressed there.
