The Mick Ronson Cry Baby Wah.
Rono’s Wah was a 1970’s Cry Baby built in the Italian Jen factory. I don’t know what made his sound the way it did, a Friday afternoon build, component value differences or part substitution, but it had a serious midrange nose on it. He used this on Spiders eara Bowie, all his solo albums, which are my favourites as well as everything he did with Ian Hunter and beyond.
This recreation is great. Totally different from a regular Cry Baby. Cocked, it’s mid focused and squawks (Moonage Daydream, Jean Genie territory). When swept there’s a point in the arc which is really menacing (Cracked Actor, even RATM Bulls on Parade). It’s put a grin on my face for sure!
It’s maximum GLAM! Rendered in blue sparkle and embossed red rubber, it looks nothing like Mick’s Jen but does evoke Bowie’s Aladdin Sane lightning bolt makeup.
